Emma W’s art is on display (and 🤑available for purchase🤑) at 1369 Coffee House in Central Square. Get those prints while you can! Van Gogh found quaking!
It’s so great to have Aidan back at HKS for the semester. Running into him is like seeing a special guest star in the forum.
Spotted: Shadman, in an embroidered Patagonia vest, reading When McKinsey Comes to Town at Harpoon Brewery. Do with that what you will.
Jenny remains *the* best source of information on practically everything. And WOW did she look fab in over-the-knee boots at a Belfer-adjacent banquet last week!
This Week in Political Gaffe History: Bill de Blasio Kills Staten Island Chuck
As far as holidays go, Groundhog Day (which was on Thursday) is deeply mid, maybe lower mid. But in the quaint, Frozen-filled year 2014, then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio put Groundhog Day on the map when he dropped and critically injured the groundhog on Staten Island. The rodent weatherman (given name: Charles G. Hogg; nickname: Staten Island Chuck) perished after he sprung from BDB’s arms and tumbled down his famously too-long legs. de Blas’ signature oafishness compounded the chaos: Who’s to say whether Chuck would have survived his wounds if he’d fallen from a less severe height. AND to boot, Billiam was unpopular on Staten Island—it’s the only borough he lost in either of his campaigns. The nerve to go to their turf and kill their mammalian meteorologist!
The Staten Island Zoo remained cagey about whether Chuck died because of fall-related injuries, but BDB never made eyes with a groundhog again. In 2015, he stayed six feet from Chuck’s daughter, Charlotte, who was caged for her protection and his dignity, and he declined to attend groundhog-related events from 2016-2020. RIP SI CHUCK!!!!

Isaiah’s Frosted Tips: How to Survive the Arctic Blast
Well friends, here we are again. Many of you may be viewing the prospect of going to class in these arctic conditions once more with dread. But as a survivor of the record-breaking Michigan polar vortex of 2019, I’m happy to share some tips to help you make it through your last winter as an MPP!
Lots of layers: A tried and true piece of advice, the best way to keep out the cold is to bundle up. This is also great if you’re going to be indoors for awhile, because you can shed some or all of those layers to manage your temperature in class.
Cover up!: The trick to heat management while outside is keeping your body heat from escaping, so you need to limit how much skin is exposed to the wind. Hats, gloves, scarves, even leftover cloth face masks can work wonders here.
Find a warm drink: For some it’s coffee, for me it’s hot apple cider. Tasty drinks that raise your core temperature can extend your time outside, as the heat radiates outward through your body.
Plan fun outdoor winter activities: This may seem counterproductive, but hear me out! Winter gets exponentially worse when the only way you experience it is by trudging through the snow, cold, and gross brown/ gray slush to get to HKS. Spending time with friends doing fun things you can only do in winter can build positive memories/ associations and make winter more manageable. (Some may say this is just a sneaky way for me to suggest a Delta ice skating or tubing out. I will neither confirm nor deny that assertion.)
Maximize your sunlight: Another one of the worst parts of winter is how early the sun sets and how many days are gray and gloomy, in addition to cold. Fight that seasonal depression by getting as much natural light as you can during the day. Especially make the most of every sunny day we get, even if it’s 10 degrees and windy and that sun is through a window.
Remember that it’ll all be over soon: If all else fails, take solace in knowing it’ll only be a few weeks before Boston starts warming up, spring break comes and goes, and we’ll be submitting our PAEs and getting ready to go out and change the world in much warmer places.
